In a recent interview, İsmet Korukoğlu, the Turkish Ambassador to the TRNC, shed light on the remarkable potential of Ercan Airport’s new terminal. With a capacity to accommodate 10-12 million passengers annually, the newly inaugurated terminal establishes Ercan as Cyprus’ largest passenger facility. Ambassador Korukoğlu’s statements come amid increasing discussions, including British MP Iain Duncan Smith’s call for direct flights to the TRNC. Addressing this, Korukoğlu emphasized the significance of the MP’s appeal and suggested that substantial investments underscore the region’s potential. In alignment with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s sentiments, the Ambassador expressed hope for the eventual establishment of direct flights from Ercan Airport.

Moreover, Ambassador Korukoğlu commented on Russia’s recent decision to open a consular office in the TRNC. While he clarified that this move doesn’t equate to formal recognition, he recognized its importance. He cautioned against drawing immediate political implications, stating that the step signifies Russia’s engagement rather than recognition. Korukoğlu pointed out that this decision aligns with the sentiments of Russian citizens residing in the TRNC, estimating their population to be slightly above 10,000.

This speculation about Ercan Airport’s potential and the region’s geopolitical dynamics underscores the ongoing developments in North Cyprus, warranting global attention.
